Sajeeb A. Wazed explains the concept of Digital Bangladesh

    allDhaka, March 2 — Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed, grand son of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and ICT advisor to Sheikh Hasina, delivered a presentation Tuesday in Dhaka on the government's initiatives to build a digitized Bangladesh. Sajeeb who was introduced as a computer scientist and IT specialist based in the United States, said the plan had four areas: e-governance, IT education, IT industry and IT outsourcing.
    "All of these are rested on infrastructure that is telecommunication."

    Father of nation killerkillers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman were executed at Dhaka Central Jail shortly after Wednesday midnight. Mohiuddin Ahmed (artillery) was first to be executed at 12:05am and then four others walked to the gallows one after another. Four others are Maj (retd) Bazlul Huda, Lt Col (retd) Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Syed Farooq Rahman and Maj (retd) AKM Mohiuddin (lancer).

    Father of nation killerTwo convicted killers in Bangabandhu assassination case--Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan and Syed Farooq Rahman--were buried Thursday morning at their ancestral villages in Brahmanbari and Naogaon. Meanwhile, the body of another convict Bazlul Huda reached at his home village at Hatboalia in Alamdanga of Chuadanga district. Huda's younger brother Nurul Huda received the body, our Kushtia correspondent reports. The Namaj-e-Janaza of Huda was held at Hatboalia High School field of the upazila around 12:05pm. He is expected to be buried at his family graveyard.

    Father of nation killerThe Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the High Court verdict that confirmed death sentences of 12 retired and dismissed army men in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mijubur Rahman assassination case. The five-member bench comprising Justice Md Tafazzul Islam, Justice Md Abdul Aziz, Justice BK Das, Justice Md Muzammel Hossain, and Justice SK Sinha delivered the verdict dismissing the appeals filed by five convicts against their death sentences in this case.

    Design, guarantee get knock from experts

    imageAs efforts are afoot to revive the controversial Jatrabari flyover project, experts say two major issues the design and an unprecedented blanket guarantee -- remain unresolved. The flyover will have long pillars going into the ground, and the proposed metro rail a subway system connecting Tongi in the north with Narayanganj in the south is supposed to go through the same area. The pillars will obstruct the metro rail for which tunnels will have to be dug deeper to bypass the pillars. This will substantially increase the cost of the metro system, experts say.

    Role of peacekeepers raises country’s image: Hasina

    Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday announced that her government would impart training to Bangladeshi peacekeepers with modern arms and ammunition so they could cope with foreign troops engaged in UN peacekeeping operations. "We have already taken various measures including imparting modern training to the members of armed and police forces aiming at sending more troops to UN Peace Keeping Missions as our country's participation in peace mission largely depends on our ability to send troops and their training," she said. The Prime Minister was addressing a prize giving ceremony marking the United Nations Peacekeeping Day-2010 at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre here on Sunday afternoon.

    PDB needs Tk5,000cr subsidy to buy power from rental plants

    The government will have to provide Tk 5,000 crore in subsidy to the power sector in the coming fiscal year to purchase electricity from the costly rental power plants. However, the amount of subsidy will be less if the power tariff is increased, according to officials with the power ministry and other agencies in the power sector. Of the amount, about Tk 3,000 crore will be required for purchasing electricity only from diesel-based rental power plants having total capacity of 450MW with per unit production cost of Tk 13-14. The remaining amount will be required for the furnace oil-based plants.

    The government will amend Bank Companies Act by early next year as part of an ambitious plan to reform legal frameworks that regulate the country's corporate world, the Finance Minister said Saturday.
