A few short minutes ago Shuchinta announced this year’s winner of the Shuchinta Shadhinota Podok.
Renowned Islamic scholar and freedom fighter, Mr. Hasan Mahmud became the second person to win this award. The first winner was Mr. Mahbubur Rahman from Dallas, Texas. Read Mr. Rahman’s announcing email below.

It is with great pleasure and honor that I announce our winner of the Shuchinta Shadhinota Podok 2007.
And the winner of the Shuchinta Shadhinota Podok 2007 is Mr. Hasan Mahmud!
Mr. Mahmud is the director of the Muslim Canadian Congress (MCC) and maintains a very active role against the theological aspects of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh. He writes under the pen name Fatemolla and his website, BanglarIslam.com, is a rich resource for accurate documents on this issue. He is a brave freedom fighter who worked in the intelligentsia during our Independence War of 1971. His writings and presentations can be found in different forums across the net, renowned global seminars on human rights and Islam, and he is a leading force in the progressive conscience of Bangladesh.
As the first recipient of the Shuchinta Shadhinota Podok, I take profound pride in congratulating Mr. Hasan Mahmud for his accomplishments and his winning this award from Shuchinta. We hope he will make us stronger and more united in the time to come.

Tarique Zia - son of late president Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, the man who was at the centre of the rampant corruption unleashed in the last five years of the BNP-Jamaat regime and who from BNP’s political office Hawa Bhaban controlled everything from civil administration to political arena, was arrested in the early hours of today from the cantonment residence of his mother. It has been reported in many media that people are distributing sweets, although they are skeptical if Tarique Rahman can be brought to justice.
